Future is Now (CUNY IT Conference 2010): E-Readers

Faculty from the Leonard Lief Library led a round table discussion at 9th Annual CUNY IT Conference on December 14, 2010. They presented on their experiences launching CUNY's first downloadable e-library before opening up the floor for discussion.

Sony Reader PRS-600

We chose the Sony Reader PRS-600 for the following reasons:

  • Supports both EPUB and PDF e-books (non-proprietary e-book formats)
  • Ability to change text size
  • Built-in dictionary
  • Memory card expansion slot (allows students to bring their own memory cards with e-book content)
  • Ability to take notes

Lending E-Readers

The following is a loan agreement that students have to sign before checking out an e-reader from the Lehman College library:

The library held a training workshop for its faculty and staff on January 19, 2011, to acquaint everyone with our e-readers and e-books.  See the outline for more:

This is a video (found on YouTube) that was used to acquaint library faculty and staff with the Sony Reader.

User Instructions

The following handout is available in the library.  It displays a labeled diagram of the Sony Reader and explains how to use the device.

E-readers that are compatible with OverDrive inlcude:

  • B&N NOOK™ and NOOKcolor™
  • Kobo™ eReader
  • Pandigital® Novel

Mobile Devices

By installing the OverDrive Media Console v2.0 app, many smartphones can be used to listen to audiobooks and read e-books.  This includes all Apple products (iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch) and Android-powered phones.  OverDrive is currently working on a BlackBerry app.
