CUNY Anti-Hate Intiative

SEEDS of Change (SOC) is a value-centered approach to anti-racism, anti-discrimination and cultural responsiveness. It takes its name from the Lehman College Strategic Plan, which emphasizes the following values – illustrated by the acronym SEEDS - Social justice, Excellence, Ethics, Diversity and inclusion, and Service. It is also informed by Transformative Cultural Responsiveness (TCR) theory, a three-stage model that centers increasing awareness of cultural differences, intercultural dialogue and a commitment to actively transforming systems (Comeaux et al., 2021)

SOC developed in response to findings from Lehman’s Campus Climate Survey  that revealed specific communities (first-generation, lower income, students of color, trans-spectrum) held less favorable views of the campus and the growing number of hate crimes (e.g., hate mail, graffiti) targeting Black-owned and Jewish businesses in the Bronx. In light of global conflicts contributing to campus tensions, SOC also focuses on collaborative activities aimed at dismantling stereotypes and fostering understanding while educating and engaging the campus community on critical issues of anti-hate, anti-oppression, inclusion, and empathy.

This curated collection of eBooks and streaming films will serve as an invaluable resource for the Lehman community, offering access to materials that foster a deeper appreciation of the complex issues surrounding diversity, international conflicts, social justice, and collective action.

Funding and support for SOC has come from CUNY Central campus climate and anti-hate initiatives and the Lehman College Division of Student Affairs.

This collection of 100 eBooks was made possible through strategic funds from the Provost's Office in 2022.
