RefWorks: Editing References

Editing References

It is important to be able to edit your references so you can edit them for completeness and accuracy.

  • When viewing your references, click [Edit] icon on the right side of the gray bar.
  • In the window that pops up, you can edit every part of the reference:

Edit reference

  • Fields used by: Select your output style (e.g., APA) and see the fields used in APA citations.
  • Reference Type: Usually populated automatically when you input your citation, this field identifies the type of item (e.g., book, article, web page) that you have saved.
  • Note that data may display awkwardly (see "Authors" field). Also note that the "Attachments" and "Add to folder" fields are visible by scrolling down. Expand "Additional fields" to view article abstract ("Abstract"), keywords ("Descriptors"), and to add notes of your own ("Personal Notes").
  • When you're finished reviewing and editing the reference, click [Save Reference] button in the bottom-right corner of the window.
  • To close the editing window, click on the X in the upper-right corner of the window.

Attachments

You have the option of attaching files to citations. This can be the article itself, any notes about the article you've saved electronically, or anything else you think should be bundled with the citation.

  • When viewing your references, click [Edit] icon on the right side of the gray bar.
  • Scroll to the Attachments field, click "Browse...", and select a file from your computer.
  • A thumbnail will appear. To save, click "Save Reference" in the bottom of the window.
